Alex experienced a difficult upbringing, dealing with unsafe and uncertain experiences, and even experiencing life on the streets. Now, she is one of New Beginnings’ newest Student Scholars, currently studying to become a social worker at San Diego City College. Thoughtful, self-aware, and eager to grow, Alex shared, “I would like to learn how to develop more maturity and also be able to share my passions with another person. It can possibly be another way to be involved with the community more.” Sarah brings years of experience supporting youth facing trauma, poverty, and housing instability—and with a heart for equity and connection, she knew right away the Be A Friend program aligned with her values. Together, they are building a relationship grounded in curiosity, encouragement, and community engagement. Their friendship is a reminder that when two people bring openness and mutual purpose, something beautiful begins to grow.
